Elks Home Service Program

IN HOME CARE FOR NEIGHBORS IN NEED

Our Home Service Program is the Pennsylvania Elks State Major Project, yet many Elks are not aware of what this program involves.  It has staff, it has clients, it has an important purpose.  Its purpose is to provide hope and independence for many Pennsylvania citizens.

Our staff includes 26 highly trained nurses who provide in-home care management services.  They act as advocates and provide resource information for our clients.  Our clients are those persons who have developmental disabilities which include, but are not limited to, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, mental retardation, speech, hearing and visual disorders.  Home Service offers early intervention, adds support while growing up and helps adults become self-sufficient and independent.  The program is totally free to individuals with disabilities who are diagnosed before age 22.  There is no discrimination due to gender, economic situation, race, religion, or personal preference.

The provision of management services includes finding educational opportunities, locating needed services and cutting red tape in implementing these services.  Our Staff is knowledgeable of the rights of the person with the disability and also those of his or her family members.

The Home Service Program pays for the nurses’ salaries, their transportation and training.  The program is funded through the Elks National Foundation grants, The Pennsylvania Legacy Fund and contributions from our Elk members.  All member donations are spent on services.  Administrative costs are paid through the ENF grants.

The Home Service nurse in our area covers Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties.  The West Shore Lodge interacts with the clients and their families by inviting them to several lodge functions.  They participate in the Easter Egg Hunt which is held for member’s children and grandchildren.  In addition, the committee holds a picnic in the summer specifically for the clients and their families, as well as a Christmas Party in December.

The Home Service Committee meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm.  If you have any ideas, questions, or messages for the Home Service Committee, please complete the form below.
